About Carbon

Polishing, or filtering, is a typical next step after distillation. It's an uncomplicated way to “clean up” your spirit and make sure the purest possible taste. If you want to use flavourings, we suggest filtering neutral spirit

Remember, filtering your spirit can help improve the flavour, but it’s only effective to a certain extent. If the taste isn’t quite right, you might need to dilute and re-distil the spirit. There are many different home brew filters available for “polishing” or filtration of spirits. Almost all of them use activated carbon in some way.

Activated carbon, commonly known as activated charcoal, is produced by combining a chemical like phosphoric acid and high heat. Wood sawdust or wood chips are the basis of most activated carbons, although other items such as plastic and stone may be carbonised and activated.

Activated carbon is very porous, meaning it has a lot of surface area. This allows it to trap larger impurities inside its pores through adsorption. Adsorption is different from absorption, where molecules are incorporated or taken into a substance.
